Focal stereotactic reirradiation for locally recurrent prostate cancer after EBRT or brachytherapy

11:00 AM - 11:20 AM

Biography

George is a senior staff specialist in radiation oncology at RNSH, and a VRO at GenesisCare and Dubbo Base Hospital. His area of interest are GU and GI malignancies. Following a general clinical fellowship at the Royal Prince Alfred Hospital in 1999, he was awarded a post-graduate fellowship at the University of Toronto specializing in GU malignancies and prostate brachytherapy. This fellowship cemented a career long interest and aptitude for research directed clinical work - always striving to combine cutting edge technologies with scientific evidence to improve patient care. George returned to Australia in Dec 2000 commencing as a Staff Specialist in Radiation Oncology at Royal Prince Alfred Hospital. He also established a close working relationship with the urologists in Noumea and has treated many New Caledonians with GU and GI malignancies over the years. Following his return from Toronto, George established the High Dose Rate brachytherapy program at Royal Prince Alfred Hospital performing over 300 implants since its inception in 2002. Other skills honed include trans-perineal biopsies, fiducial marker placement and inserting hydrogel spacer. George was instrumental in introducing more sophisticated techniques for the treatment of prostate cancer patients such as image guided radiation treatment (IGRT) at RPA. In 2014 George treated the first prostate cancer patients with SABR (stereotactic ablative body radiotherapy) for oligo-metastatic disease at RPA. In 2015, George was invited to join the specialised radiation oncology (SRO) team as a staff specialist at Royal North Shore, and as a Visiting Radiation Oncologist (VRO) at Genesis Care where he currently treats patients at St Vincents Clinic and the Health Hub. He enjoys robust collaboration as part of the GU team along with A/Profs Andrew Kneebone and Thomas Eade. This triumvirate has been a very productive and rewarding partnership with areas of interest including focal re-treatment of prostate cancer, “virtual HDR”; real-time imaging and the introduction of state of the art imaging such as PSMA-PET for staging, targeting, mapping and assessing the response to RT in prostate cancer. As well as contributing to local trials including focal SBRT re-treatment; GH has been heavily involved in national and international trials and is an active participant in TROG (and FROGG) and ANZUP where he serves on the scientific advisory committee. GH has authored numerous peer reviewed publications and is involved in teaching, mentoring and lecturing.
